Informed Consent at NMH

Obtaining informed consent for a healthcare intervention is not as simple as just getting a patient to sign a form.

It is well established that a signature, by itself, does not necessarily mean that informed consent has been obtained.

Gaining consent is an ongoing process that involves a treatment provider communicating effectively with a patient, clearly explaining the options available and allowing the patient sufficient time to make an informed choice about whether to proceed.
