Core Plus Primary - Medication and Infusion Therapy

Completion of the following courses are required to attain the first competency level of medication and infusion therapy administration for health care staff, such as Enrolled Nurses, Midwives and Registered Nurses. Recertification is recommended three yearly thereafter and includes a refresher of the Clinical Calculations and Medication Safety courses and a clinical competency assessment. 

Recommended for: Staff who administer medication and/or infusion therapy, in general practices or community healthcare (with IV responsibilities) complete Core Plus 1-6. For staff working in settings such as Aged Residential Care (with no IV responsibilities) complete Core Plus 1-4.  

Core Plus Primary - Medication and Infusion Therapy program contains the following courses:

  • Medication Safety

  • Clinical Calculations

  • Oral Medication

  • Subcutaneous Therapy

  • Intravenous Fluid Administration

  • Intravenous Medication Administration


Kathryn Harding, CNS Infection Prevention and Control will discuss the following topics:

  • ALERT awareness
  • Hand hygiene related to IV therapy
  • Needle Stick injuries

Professional develeopment time - 1 hour

Primary Care Infusion Therapy - Medication Safety

Ash Singh - Pharmacist,  Whanganui DHB will discuss the following topics:

  • Avoiding Medication Errors
  • Storage and Safety
  • Intravenous Antibiotics
  • Iron Infusions
  • Bone Health

Professional development time - 1 hour

 

Cannulation for Practice Nurses working in General Practice.
