 At the completion of this module the Nurse/Midwife will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the standards and policy related to intravenous controlled drug administration with HBDHB.
  • Discuss the pharmacology of selected controlled drugs.
  • Discuss the practice required to administer intravenous controlled drugs.
  • Discuss the related side effects and solutions.

You will be awarded 1 hour professional development upon completion of the clinical audit component of this course.

It is the responsibility of the Registered Nurse / Midwife to attain and maintain IV designation. Completion of this designation will enable you to:

  1. Administer and manage intravenous fluids, blood and blood products (+/- electronic infusion devices)
  2. Administer and manage subcutaneous fluids Reconstitute and administer IV medications (excluding controlled drugs and advanced level medications e.g. phenytoin)
  3. Restart a non-functioning IV line
  4. Change an IV access device and flush a peripheral line
  5. Remove a peripheral line

The purpose of this course is to train clinical staff in the safe management of CVC's (e.g. medication administration, blood sampling, dressing, accessing of implanted ports, removal of PICC lines and non-tunnelled central lines etc.) This training must be completed before attending the Central Venous Catheters workshop.

 

Participants: This course is designed for nurses who wish to become competent with the advanced IV skill of Subcutaneous Implantable Port (SIP) certification

This course is designed to provide participants with knowledge of accessing, maintaining and deaccessing patients who have a SIP.  Also briefly discussed is the nurses role for educating patients and whanau in caring for this type of IV access.
