Vascular Access Management: Central Venous Lines
This course will cover the care and maintenance of PIVLs and CVLs
Key Learning Outcomes:
Following the completion of this course the RN/RM will be able to:
- Understand the importance of no-touch technique in performing IV Line procedures
- Discuss correct PIVL flushing technique, clamping sequence, and dressing + extension set management
- Identify the most suitable time to perform PIVL blood sampling
- Identify and understand management of PIVL complications
- Outline key factors to consider when undertaking an assessment for the selection of a CVL
- Describe how to care and manage different types of CVL’s
- Identify potential risks / complications related to different CVLs’ and nursing interventions to avoid or correct these
- Discuss the application of Infection control measures when caring for patients with a CVL
- Undertake a practical competency assessment to demonstrate:
- CVL dressing and injection port change technique
- Administration of a medication via CVL
This course is worth four (4) hours of professional development time.
