Enteral tubes – Indications, complications and management - National

This course is for nursing staff working in either inpatient or community settings. All specialties will have patients in their care who have enteral feeding tubes and therefore is becoming essential for nurses to have some knowledge about management and care for these patients.

Please note, this course does not include the care and management of naso-gastric or naso-jejunal tubes.

On completion you will be able to:

  1. Identify different types of enteral feeding tubes
  2. Understand the indications for various tubes
  3. Provide patients with education about daily care requirements
  4. Basic trouble shooting of enteral feeding tubes
  5. Replace dislodged tubes and check correct position
  6. Understand various methods of delivering feed and the pumps associated with this

  • Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube (PEG)
  • Radiological inserted gastrostomy (RIG)
  • Balloon replacement tube
  • Low profile gastrostomy tube
  • Transgastric jejunal tubes
  • Surgical jejunostomy
  • Paediatric specific tubes
