Introduction to ORL and Head and Neck Cancer

Kia ora! The overall aim of this course is for nursing staff to grow in their understanding of ORL Head and Neck conditions, providing safe and optimal nursing care for post-operative ORL/ Head and Neck patients admitted to the ward and PACU or seen through OPD and the community.

The learning objectives are:

  • To grow and develop the nursing skill base in the area of patient contact with the patients of the ORL service and the ORL clinical team.
  • To be able to provide appropriate and safe nursing care for any patient admitted to North Shore Hospital with ORL, Head and Neck related conditions both pre and post operatively.

About this course:

This course is a workshop to compliment the Advancing Shift Coordinator E-Learning.

This workshop will continue to provide nurses in the Surgical Services who shift coordinate with knowledge and skills that will support them to advance their practice as shift coordinators. As well as raise awareness of how they contribute as a shift coordinator to WDHB, to help facilitate best outcomes for staff and patients.

There are many situations that arise that as the shift coordinator your colleagues turn to you to help resolve the issue. It is not possible to prepare you for all possible scenarios, however this course is aimed at some of those common situations that you may have to deal with whilst coordinating a shift.

We will discuss the shift coordinators role with the following moments:

Deteriorating patients and End of life care
The death of a patient and Coroner's cases
Prisoners & AWOL patients

The learning objectives are:

The learning objectives are:

  • Apply anatomy and physiology knowledge to the patient with Upper GI cancer and the interventions e.g. surgical procedures
  • Safely educate and care for patients post gastric stent insertion
  • Safely care for patients with an obstruction

Learning objectives are:

  • Be confident in assessing wounds and understand the importance of wound bed preparation

  • Be able to discuss aseptic technique and utilise the principle in practice 
  • Identify different types of skin grafts, process and management
  • Understand the difference between venous and arterial leg ulcers
  • Identify the different types of compression
  • Recognise a wound that is at risk of dehiscence and how to manage
  • Identify products used to prevent wound dehiscence
  • Gain a better understanding of fistulas & the management of fistulas
  • Identify the principles that guide the use of modern wound dressings


Diabetes in the Surgical Setting
