Cultural competence refers to an ability to communicate and interact effectively with people of different cultures. It is not just about knowing another person’s culture. In the healthcare setting it is about understanding how cultural differences impact on the consulting relationship and being able to adjust your behaviour to accommodate these differences for the best patient outcomes.

This programme is provided to Te Toka Tumai Auckland employees by eCALD, an external training organisation on their website.

Note: Your completed learning will be sent to the Organisation Development team to record in your Te Toka Tumai Auckland record of learning.  It will not be recorded on Ko Awatea LEARN.

The assessment of knowledge of tikanga recommended best practice occurs within the context of ADHB Policy. This includes appropriate protocols and clinical practice guidelines to support the delivery of optimal patient care.

It is expected that clinicians, managers, supervisors and people at all levels who need to be able to respond to Māori patients and whanau more effectively and with greater confidence will complete this assessment.

This assessment is consistent with ADHB’s objectives and goals. It is based on the two topics covered by the interactive lesson courseware. The first part is concerned with tikanga facts and concepts associated with the living patient. The second part covers tikanga practices associated with the Tūpāpaku (deceased).
