This course is used as part of a blended learning package, coupled with a face to face session the registered nurse will obtain credentialing in gastrostomy tube replacement.

 About this course:

Kia ora! The overall aim of this course is for the registered nurse to understand and demonstrate safe management of gastrostomy tube management

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of what gastrostomy feeding is
  • Demonstrate and understand the specific nursing requirements of an individual with a gastrostomy tube
  • Understand and demonstrate competent practice in changing a gastrostomy tube
  • Demonstrate validation technique

The online learning is coupled with three face to face study days, on total giving 60 CPD hours,

This course is part of the blended package focusing on the care of the adult client within the primary health setting with a tracheostomy or laryngectomy. 

Tracheostomy care is complex and requires fundamental knowledge of anatomy and physiology prior to moving to the complex clinical skills or providing advice for tracheostomy management.

This program is for those working in the community setting who are assisting in the management of patients with trachesotomy and or laryngectomy and may need to provide interdisciplinary advice or knowledge.  

The following modules will focus upon aspects of care including, understanding anatomy and physiology of a tracheostomy and laryngectomy, stoma management, inner tube/dressing/ tie changing, and suctioning. 

 A further practical session is required to obtain certification.

  • To be able to recognize the symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction 
  • To differentiate between an anaphylactic reaction and a faint
  • To be confident in the administration of the correct dose of adrenaline in an emergency situation in the community or clinical setting
