Sharps Bin Competency Assessment

Research shows that: 

  • ADHB Sharps Bins are being inadequately used for Sharp items

  • Workers have very little training about what constitutes a “sharp item” versus a blunt item (which can be disposed of by alternate methods)
  • The financial and environmental cost of emptying the Sharps Bins is significant. ADHB could direct $150,000 per annum back into patient care just by using these Sharps Bins correctly.

Audiences It will enable all new clinical staff to better understand ADHB policy and practice for sharps disposal. The current clinical staff will meet an essential level of competency in sharps management.
