Informed Consent - Surgical Services

Intended audience: Intended for RMOs and SMOs working within Surgical Services. This is also available for any Theatre Staff i.e. nurses, anaesthetic techs etc.

Duration: Approximately 30 minutes. This does not need to be completed in one sitting.

This course is designed to teach you about the key topics around informed consent and will cover the following topics:

What is Informed consent?
Every time treatment is provided, a doctor must have permission to provide that treatment. The process of obtaining that permission is called 'informed consent'. Without informed consent, the treatment may be unlawful. To help the patient decide whether they want a treatment, they first need to be given information, such as the risks and benefits of their treatment options

Why is this course important?
Understanding and applying the principles of informed consent ensures patient rights under the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights 1996 (The Code of Rights) are protected. It also serves to safeguard health care professionals in terms of their expected standards of practice.
