Asbestos Awareness Course

  Intended audience: FSG workers - workers working in buildings in the Te Whatu Ora Health NZ Waitemata portfolio built on or before the year 2000.

 About this course:

Kia ora! The overall aim of this course is to provide you with Asbestos Awareness Training. The course will take approximately 1 hour to complete.

From 1st September 2022 all contractors engaged by Facilities Services Group (FSG) who will be working in buildings (built pre the year 2000) will be required to provide evidence that they have undertaken Mandatory annual Asbestos Awareness Training. This evidence is required to be submitted and verified prior to undertaking any works/activities on all Te Whatu Ora Health NZ Waitemata sites. This will also include workers working externally in the grounds around the various sites.


Contractors who will require mandatory asbestos awareness training:

•   Contractors completing maintenance works.

•   Contractors completing refurbishment projects.

•   Managers or consultants who are managing contractors who are doing works as specified above.


This Asbestos Awareness Course must be completed annually to work on site at Te Whatu Ora Health NZ Waitemata sites. By the end of this course, you will be able to work on site in buildings built pre the year 2000.

The course is designed to provide an assessed introduction to the Thrombelastograph (TEG).

Evidence of knowledge recall is required annually to a minimum standard of 90%.

The target audience includes all TEG users within ADHB (mainly staff nurses and anaesthetic technicians).

For the purposes of assessment, recall of the following is required: 

  • Use of the TEG analyser
  • Key TEG components
  • Collection requirements and time frame for testing
  • Importance of correct analyser/sample preparation
  • Result interpretation
  • Basic troubleshooting
  • Maintenance
