Participants: This course has been arranged to provide participants an introductory overview of adult learning, and a toolkit of options to consider when developing a lesson plan that engages their learners in a session.  It is designed for Waitemata DHB staff who have the responsibility for presenting to, or teaching other staff.

This course covers:

  • Valuing the adult learner and considering their learning preferences in a teaching session.
  • The learning process and stages, and considerations for presenting to different generation groups.
  • How to effectively design and structure a lesson plan for teaching content and skills to an audience.
  • Skills for coaching, peer consultation and teaching and engaging your audience.
  • Working with the complexities of personalities in your audiences.
  • Peer consultation groups and principles of effective peer group work.

The workshop focuses on participants being flexible in using these skills. During class there is some theory, discussion and sharing of ideas, with most emphasis on demonstration and practice, in a fun and safe way.

  • Gaining greater clarity and definition of the educator or teaching role and responsibilities.
  • Familiarisation of adult learning concepts, learning preferences, and the learning process.
  • Establishing a safe and inclusive learning environment that considers the learning needs of culturally diverse participants.
  • Performing a learning needs analysis that considers organisational & consumer outcomes.
  • Writing clear course goals.
  • Designing evidenced learning interventions.
  • Sourcing and developing relevant material for learning.
  • Writing clear lesson plans for teaching adult learners.
  • Organise and set up learning events to support learning outcomes.
  • Designing learner assessments and course evaluations that match learning aims and performance objectives. Including an evaluation structure to support ongoing learning in the workplace.
  • Managing self-effectiveness and learners' responses through the stages of group development, and individual complexities.
  • Using presentation skills that enhance audience engagement, interest and participation.
  • Preparing and structuring feedback in conversations and during a debrief process. Using debriefing as a learning opportunity.
  • Participate in and facilitate effective peer consultation sessions.
