This education is for staff who have no clinical contact or limited contact with breastfeeding whānau. ie Level One awareness staff are - theatre staff, pain team nurses, hearing screeners, maternal mental health staff, social workers, reception staff, ward clerks, health care assistants, hospital support workers, cleaners and physiotherapists. Midwives and Nurses who work closely with breastfeeding whānau have their own course.

 We provide this compulsory education so you are aware of your role in supporting the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. It will take you approximately 1/2 hr and you will receive a certificate on completion .

On completion you will;

  • Know what the WHO CODE is and how to uphold it 

  • Have awareness about the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and why breastfeeding is important

  • Know what your scope of practice is around breastfeeding whānau and to refer to nurses and midwives if whānau need help with breastfeeding or are requesting formula

  • There are short quizzes at the end of each section 

  • This must be completed on employment and then once every 3 years

Level 3 Specialist .i.e. Midwives and Nurses & Level 4 Expert .i.e. Lactation Consultants and others who may work with lactating people i.e. speech language therapists & childbirth educators  

What

The Baby Friendly Initiative, requires 1 hour of education on Breastfeeding for Māori to increase our understanding and awareness of traditional whangai ū /breastfeeding practices and the effects of colonisation.  All level 3 & 4 staff on start of employment are to complete this online module and then every 30 min of "Breastfeeding for Māori" every 3 years, as part of "The 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding" and the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative.

Kia ora, this SUDI prevention course has been created by Hāpai Te Hauora, the national governance for all of Aotearoa.

Who this course is for:  All health professionals who are caring for whānau who have a pēpi/ tamariki under the age of one.

Duration: In this course there are 7 modules.  This will take approximately an hour to complete.
