About this course

The Violence Intervention Programme (VIP) team present a one day course for all WDHB staff who are working with individuals in the community and inpatient services.

The course covers the dynamics, identification and how to respond to Family Violence, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) situations.

  • Understanding the dynamics of Intimate Partner Violence (IVP) and Child Abuse & Neglect (CAN)
  • Implementing the Ministry of Health (MOH) Six Step Response to (IPV) and (CAN)
  • Identifying how you can make a difference!
  • Provision of a take home Training Workbook for ongoing reflection and reference

Please note: Before enrolling please discuss with your manager how this course will help you meet your performance objectives.

Target audience: Any Te Toka Tumai employee, priority given to those whose services support the practice of routine enquiry for family violence.

Pre-requisites: must complete both the Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and the Child Abuse & Neglect (CAN) the online component before signing up to the face-to-face training

As healthcare providers, we play a key role in supporting the safety of the individuals and families in our care. Our Violence Intervention Programme (VIP), which is aimed at all Te Whatu Ora Te Tai Tokerau healthcare professionals who deal with child abuse or inter- familial partner violence.

Once you have completed this module, you may be required to complete the National VIP module prior to attending the core training workshop.

The content of this eCourse mirrors the key aspects learnt during the face to face Violence Intervention Programme training.

All staff in MoH high risk designated areas (Women’s Health, Paediatrics, Emergency Care and Mental Health ), are required to attend the facilitated VIP training. This needs to be followed up annually through the eCourse refresher training programme.

Course Prerequisites:
The eCourse refresher training programme is geared towards supporting staff that have previously attended the VIP training.

  • 1 to 2 years after having done the VIP training, staff are required to do the eModule refresher training.
  • Over 2 years it is recommended that the staff member attends the latest face to face training.

Due to the complex nature of family violence it is imperative that every applicant has first attended face to face VIP training.

This course is equivalent to 1 hour of Professional Development Time

In response to the Crimes Amendment Act (3) in 2011, Waitematā DHB has established a Vulnerable Adults Response (VAR) Policy, which outlines the pathways we work in when dealing with Vulnerable Adults across the DHB. About this course

This Study Day builds upon the introductory 'Vulnerable Adults Response Core Training' by offering a more in depth study of specialist areas related to working with Vulnerable Adults in the Mental Health context.

Specifically, this Study Day will cover the following topics:

  • Capacity and partial capacity
  • the journey from Vulnerable Adult to orders under PPP&R or EPOA activation and how Social Work interventions can support this process (i.e. how can we support families to apply for orders under PPP&R in the community)
  • Information sharing under Family Violence Act 2018

  • Update from the Whangaia Nga Pa Harakeke (Police response) liaison

  • Introduction to Personal Advocacy and Safeguarding Adults Trust (PASAT)



This course is for all nurses and allied health staff who work with adult populations and who may come across vulnerable adults in their work. The course is designed to give learners confidence in identifying a Vulnerable Adult under the Crimes Act and understanding their responsibilities if abuse is disclosed or suspected.
